"RWA, continued"

I’ve been writing a new book and distracted with back to school coming up. So of course, I’m slacking on those RWA pics!

Okay, once again I attended the awesome Nora Roberts chat. Funny thing, new attendees each year and some of the same questions. Nora was awesome, funny, and laid it on the line. I’ll hopefully blog some of her wisdom in the coming days. Here’s a quick snapshot of her at the end. I couldn’t bring myself to bulb flash her as she was talking. I thought it was rude!

Friday, brought the GH/RITA ceremony. One of those forgot my camera events! The awesome Linnea Sinclair took my pic and I snagged Simone Elkeles’s pic of the YA finalist.

First off, I met Simone at the NLA dinner and she’s an awesome dinner conversationalist, making us laugh and showing us pics. And I had a blast being silly with Ally Carter at dinner, she loves to have fun and tell some stories of her great experiences so far in writing. (not pictured here)

Rosemary Clement-Moore (far left) was very cool and wore fab dresses, and I also met Melissa Marr (next), who is really cool and down to earth.

That night some of the YA authors got together and chatted. Here’s a pic with many of us. (Just click on the pic for a larger view and to find out who is who. :) )

I had the best time hanging out with other writers. I think that’s one of the main perks for me when attending conference. I’m always so far away from everyone and it’s just me and my computer. haha. When you go to conference there are lots of smiles, hugs, meeting new people, and revisiting friends. It’s all great and I’m glad I was able to attend this year. :)

More soon…

"RWA: Day 1"

For some reason I still feel like I’m recuperating from the conference. At this rate I won’t be back to normal for a week!

I’ve loaded some pics from Wednesday, the first day of conference. The day started off with sightseeing with the family. We always make it a small vacation when I go to a conference.

Then it was coffee/tea with my agent in Union Square at small, unique coffee shop. The weather was fabulous! I’d never had a shot of expresso in my mocha coffee before. I went from mellow to very chipper in 2.1 seconds!

Kristin & Kelly

From there it was a rush to get ready for my first “Readers for Life” Literacy signing. I was all paranoid I wouldn’t get my books sent, so the publicist for S&S sent some before I left. My books ended up arriving, but good thing I had the extra books for the press room and my workshop. Some authors were left with out their books this year too.

So I didn’t get to the signing early enough to walk around much, the room was packed elbow-to-elbow with authors, over 500. My agent took this pic with my RITA flags. And hey, I got to keep the flags. :) I sold out of my 15 books, that’s pretty good for me!

Readers For Life Lit Signing

I wanted to officially meet Nora Roberts. I didn’t have the guts in Reno and wanted to this time around. I had this funny idea I’d get the first romance I read by her autographed, but her line was long as always and I couldn’t just quickly run over and back.

I met so many writers and authors that I have been chatting with on-line for years like Rene, Jill, and Elizabeth! I also posted on YA Fresh all the YA authors I ran across. What was really cool were the teen girls buying many of the YA books. I guess some of them came with their parents.

I managed to run over to get a pic with one of my fave authors, Marjorie M. Liu. It was like, “Love your books. Big fan.” Fast hand shake. “Can we take a photo?” Marjorie was trying to keep up, shaking my head and smiling. She was sooo nice!

Overall, it was exciting! That night my agent took her clients out to dinner to the posh restaurant, Micheal Mina’s. Wow, I have never eaten food that melts in your mouth like this. And there were like five courses. haha. I could barely walk back to the hotel! These pics are from Ally Carter, I’d forgotten my cam that night in my book box. The restaurant was so dark, that was probably why toward the end I was ready to sleep.

Kelly and Ally

Here we are at the end of dinner.

NLA Clients

Wednesday was one of my busiest days at conference. Stay tuned for more!

"Back Home & Relieved"

I’m back home, and so relieved. Staying practically a week at a hotel with several events going on is exhausting. Mostly because you don’t sleep well, and my nerves were constantly hoppin’. haha.

So I didn’t pick up a RITA this year, but having it go to a NY Times bestseller was the obvious choice. Melissa Marr was very nice and polite when we met, and I’m very happy for her! I met so many cool writers! I can’t wait to share pics. I’m hoping I’ll get to it some time tomorrow, but definitely this week. And IMO, Graffiti Girl didn’t have a chance at Best First Book for a prestigious romance award, but being a RITA nominee will be an experience I won’t forget. Writers congratulated me left and right, and everyone was so nice and welcoming.

I think I’ll try and recount the conference in order of events and pics, starting with Wednesday.

If there is one thing I brought back with me from the conference was the realization that it’s time to get serious. Time to write, and write well. I’m at time in my career where I think I’m spending way too much time on promotion and I’m not all that sure my efforts are doing any good. After the release of Invisible Touch, I’m going to focus on the craft of writing instead of the craft of promotion. I have several things going on in my head, and it’s time to get them on screen before they are forgotten.

Thanks again for everyone’s support with the nomination. Now it is time to rest. :)

"Off to San Fran"

I’m off to SF RWA National Conference!

To those of you going, hope to see you there! And I’ll probably share lots of pics next week.

But for now, the Fictionistas are interviewing the YA RITA finalists this week, and giving away books! I believe my interview will be up Wednesday so stop by if you’re in the neighborhood. And I’ll be signing at the “Readers for Life” Literacy event from 5:30 – 7:30 that evening.

Don’t forget I’m blogging on the RWA site on Thursday morning.

And Saturday 11 am, I’ll pretend I know what I’m talking about in a workshop with Shelley Adina, Carol Culver, and agent Jennifer Jackson, titled 10 Things I Love About Writing YA Romance.

And Saturday 8 pm is the big ceremony. *sigh* I just want to say it’s an honor to be double nominated for a RITA. I mean, wow. All I used to relate with the RITA before I even started writing was Nora, Nora, Nora. haha. The odds are definitely stacked against me, but like I said noms are something to be proud of even if there’s not a statue attached, and I’ll gladly cheer on every winner!

Have a great week…

I may be able to drop a twitter or two by TXT, we’ll see. And there may be some flickr fun. Hard to say…

Talk to you soon!

"I’m a Blogger!"

For RWA! :)

I’ve been invited to blog as a RWA conference blogger. This should be interesting!

I’m scheduled for Thursday morning, July 31st, and I’ll probably chat about the Literacy Signing the night before. Or who knows, it’ll be the RWA through my eyes. hehe.

I hope you’ll tune in…

"10 Maybes"

10 Things Maybe I Should Have Done At Conference

1)Maybe I should have worn my badge at all times so other conference attendees wouldn’t have been talking about other writers I know while in the elevator. *wince*

2)Maybe I should have taken the time to get to know more people instead of rushing around and just taking everything in like a girl on the first day of school. Oooh!

3)Maybe I should have taken more pictures. LOL!

4)Maybe I should have waited in the long line and actually met Nora Roberts! *sigh*

5)Maybe I should have ignored the unfriendly feeling when authors didn’t smile at book signings and asked for their book anyway. Yikes!

6)Maybe I should have attended more workshops. But then I also should have taken some kind of energy booster to go-go-go-go. ;D

7)Maybe I should have brought more long sleeve tops instead of so many sleeveless to a 24/7 air conditioned hotel. Brrrr.

8) Maybe I should have known I was sitting at a table with Rachel Gibson, and sat next to her instead of the attendee who sat next to the agent and talked, and talked, and talked… *snicker*

9)Maybe I should have left the biz cards at home since I only gave out 1. LOL!

10)Maybe I and other bloggers should have worn special ribbons to identify us so we could find each other! ;D

"Final Con Update"

RWA CONFERENCE SEEN THROUGH
THE EYES OF A FIRST TIMER Part III

I apologize for the dead air, I am now semi-settled at home. =) Just a few more tidbits about Conference…

On Friday I attended a chat with Nora Roberts. Even though I am a major fan of hers, I never introduced myself, but I took a few notes from the Q & A she participated in. She is very funny, smart, confident, and seems to always know the right things to say. (These summary of comments from Nora Roberts are in my own words unless quoted.)

-Everyone has 1 hour a day where they do something they enjoy…watch TV, read, etc. Sacrifice that 1 hour and write.

-When writing a trilogy, she plots the 3 books as one big project in 3 parts so she can follow the weave of the thread through the books.

-Someone asked why she didn’t add dedications in her J.D. Robb books, she stated, “I’m running out of people I like.” LOL!

-She never missed a deadline in 25 years. She believes in professionalism. Always honoring your word and presenting yourself well.

-She usually writes books in 3 drafts. 1st) Book is written all the way through, what she calls the discovery draft. 2nd) She adds texture, fixing sentences, punching it up. 3rd) Polishing to what she believes is the best it can be before sending to the editor.

-She does not believe in trends because they come and go. Write what you would read for pleasure.

-In her early days of promotion the types of promoting she performed were purchasing bookmarks and visiting bookstores. She believes in building relationships with readers and booksellers. It’s okay if only a couple of people come to your signing, those people may tell others about your book, who then may tell more.

-Only use 10% of your advance for promotion. Only what you can afford. The Internet is a vast tool for on-line promotion.

I also attended the Pocket/Avon book signing where the authors sign and give away books. Yes, for free. I really had no idea about this. It was a fun experience chatting with authors, and introducing myself to those I had interviewed through e-mail, or some way met on-line. I also discovered something from when I’d run into a late luncheon on Thursday with no one to sit with. There was one free table left, and 2 other ladies looking around for a seat. I asked them if they’d like to sit at the table with me, they did. I didn’t sit next to them since they were pretty much only talking with one another, but when I attended the signing, I realized one of the ladies was Rachel Gibson, an author I truly admire and enjoy reading. {{head thunk}} LOL!

Thanks so much to everyone who have stopped by and visited these past few days. I hope to be back on my blogging duties tomorrow. =D

"Me Again"

RWA CONFERENCE SEEN THROUGH
THE EYES OF A FIRST TIMER Part II

Ahhh, sorry I couldn’t post last night, it ended up being a late evening. Yesterday was great. A wonderful luncheon with keynote speak Debbie Macomber. She spoke of her struggle with publication and she teared up when she spoke of her wonderful children. It was very inspirational. We also received her latest books, A Good Yarn, and The Shop On Blossom Street.

Later, I attended the Welcome Reception. The place was packed! LOL! I didn’t meet anyone from the blogging community there, and ended up hanging with my chapter mates from Monterey Bay Chapter. We had fun!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I attended the Kiss Of Death’s Death By Chocolate Party. Oh my gosh, the chocolate! Cakes, fruit and cheese for fondue, cookies, eclairs, so much rich chocolate! LOL! I had a wonderful time meeting new people. I highly recommend the event should anyone attend RWA next year. The committee did a wonderful job.

I finally got a shot of my CP, Tina and I. But ack, of course, we got her with her eyes closed!

Here’s Kristin Nelson and me.

That’s all for now, until later… =D

"I Made It!"

RWA CONFERENCE SEEN THROUGH
THE EYES OF A FIRST TIMER Part I

I made it! I made it! ;D

I made it to the RWA Conference in one piece, folks, and now I;m here to give you the low down on the showdown…er, or something like that. ;)

First off registering was simple and sweet. No line, and I walked up and received my tickets for all the events, along with a name badge, pen, pin. Then I moseyed on over to receive my nice tote absolutely LOADED with books.

The Doctor’s Latin Lover by Olivia Gates
Rules Of Engagement by Kathryn Caskie
Threshold by Sara Douglass
Secrets Volumes 10 & 11
Innocence by Kathleen Tessaro
Love in the Asylum by Lisa Carey
The Challenge by Susan Kearney
A thousand Tomorrows by Karen Kingsbury

Anyway, let’s get to the Readers for Life Literacy Signing. Here’s a big viewpoint shot. Notice it’s a short viewpoint shot, because, well, I’m short.

Here’s me with my CP, Dianna Love Snell, meeting for the first time in person! =D

Here’s Suzanne McMinn. I got her while she was signing. I’m such a stinker. Damn, I should have took a pic of the one pair of shoes she brought with her to Nationals. ;D Suzanne, also took my pic, I hear she was taking A LOT. LOL! Suzanne’s super sweet!

Here’s me with Jill Shalvis! She’s so nice! Here daughter took the pic. Jill will be September’s Words of An Author guest!

Okay, I also saw Nora Roberts, and Linda Howard. And I don’t have pics of them because I couldn’t bring myself to cut in front of everyone and just snap an annoying flash in their faces. LOL! But yeah, it was a wow moment to see them in person.

I also received an autograph from one of my FAVE authors, Wendy Rosnau, and ignoramus me was like,”Oh, I just love all your books, your romantic suspenses are wonderful.” {{Insert nervous ignoramus laugh}} Totally novice moment. I didn’t even remember to take her picture!

That’s all for now. (I don’t want to get charged an arm and a leg!) I’ll try to post some pics tomorrow evening!

"Swamped List"

The I AM SWAMPED For The Next 24 Hours List

-Finish packing (Which is basically packing a section of my life!)

-Get the infamous tote ready (Notebook, biz cards, pens, camera, tentative schedule etc…)

-Work on finishing revisions (Riiiiiight.)

-Get nervous about Nationals (weird, I seem to be the only one feeling this) while going to Nationals.

-Clean house…? (Um, we’ll see.)

***

O-kay, since this will be my first time attending Nationals (Wednesday – Friday evening, I’m skipping the ceremony this year =b), I’m going to bring my little laptop and attempt to blog about the experience. The only problem is I don’t know how this will work techie wise, hook-ups and all that jazz, as well as time frames of when I’ll be posting. So please bare with me, and if all fails, I’ll be blogging during the weekend. And as many of you know, Jill Shalvis will be blogging about Nationals with pics while she’s there! So don’t forget to mosey on over. =)

*Sigh* Here I go!
