"My Small Favorite Book Store"
I think it was about a year ago that I stepped into my first Border’s book store. Some of you might think this odd, those of you who don’t have a Border’s near you probably won’t.
(Just think of me as one of those gals who takes forever to try something new.)
Anyway, as I entered this fabulous building, I was in awe. There were aisles and aisles and so many shelves of books. So many books on hand! Backlists of books I didn’t have to order. They were in stock! It was such an awesome first time experience, and a very cool atmosphere. Now, I travel to the neighboring town monthly and I cruise in like I’ve been going to Border’s stores all my life. hah!
So during the weeks in between when I don’t feel like going out of town, I visit my favorite town book store in our mall, Waldenbooks. It’s small. I usually always have to order an older book, and the carpet could use some repair. I’ve been going to this book store for about 8 years, after the first year, I applied to work part time during the holidays. For about 4 years I worked during the holidays, got to know the great staff, as well as found out the workings of a book store. Last year, Border’s bought out Waldenbooks and I thought it would change the store, but they didn’t. And I would always say hi to my friends and they were excited to find out I actually wrote a book and sold it!
Then today, I find out my favorite small book store is closing at the end of this month.
I am so bummed about it. There’s a B. Dalton on the other side of the wall. The store is in better condition, but they aren’t Waldenbooks. I guess when B. Dalton decided to renew their lease at the mall, Border’s decided to close Waldenbooks. *sigh* My friends have to look for new jobs and these are the same friends who have been working there since I first walked into the store 8 years ago. Friends who I learned a little about each year I worked with them.
I hadn’t known how much I cared about my small favorite book store, until I learned it was closing. No, it’s not the great big Borders with the connecting coffee shop and cute gift section, but I guess it means more. It’ll be really strange when it’s gone.
So another one of my secrets is out…I’m a sentimental gal, too!
